"That Day" is the Golden Earrings' second single, after the withdrawal of Lonely Every Day.
The band chose not to release any more singles from an already available album; they were also convinced that they could write better songs than those on their debut album.
The single was recorded in the London Pye studios.

Neither "That Day" nor its B-side "The Words I Need" appear on any of the band's regular albums.

Chart debut on January 29, 1966, reaching #2 during a chart run of 13 weeks.
The single was also released in the UK and Germany, but failed to chart there.
